BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – No. 7-seed Shawnee State (Ohio) won twice on Thursday, including pulling off the biggest upset of the tournament on the first day of the Mid-South Conference Men's Bowling Tournament at Southern Lanes.
Top-seed Cumberland (Tenn.), No. 3-seed Pikeville (Ky.), and fifth-seeded Midway (Ky.) join Shawnee State in the winner's bracket semifinals of the double-elimination tournament.
Shawnee State opened the day with a 2-1 win over No. 10-seed Brescia (Ky.) in the tournament's first round and later knocked off second-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan 2-1 in come-from-behind fashion.
The Mid-South Conference implemented the Mega Match format this year to mirror the NAIA National Championships. The first set consists of the total number of pins from five bowlers in a traditional game. Set two is total pinfall in five Baker team games, and the third set, if necessary, is a best-of-seven Baker match.
After losing set one by seven pins, Shawnee State won set two 925-846 and the third set 4-2 to push Tennessee Wesleyan into the consolation bracket.
No. 8-seed Cumberlands (Ky.) defeated No. 9-seed Union Commonwealth (Ky.) in the other first-round match but fell to Cumberland 2-0 in the quarterfinals.
Midway upset fourth-seeded Campbellsville (Ky.) 2-0, and Pikeville held off No. 6-seed Lindsey Wilson 2-1, sweeping the third set to advance.
Ten matches are scheduled for Friday, including seven elimination matches. All consolation matches will use the best-of-7 Baker format. The remaining winner's bracket matches will continue using the Mega Match.
Four matches begin at 8 a.m. CT.
Cumberland faces Midway, and Pikeville meets Shawnee State in the winner's bracket. Cumberlands and Brescia, and Tennessee Wesleyan and Union Commonwealth, meet in elimination matches.
Campbellsville and Lindsey Wilson await the consolation bracket winners. Those matches are set for 10:30 a.m. CT.
The consolation bracket finals, championship match, and the if-necessary championship is slated for Saturday.
The tournament champion earns the MSC's automatic bid into the NAIA National Championship.
