LANSING, Mich. -- No. 11-seed Cumberland (Tenn.) won twice, and No. 2-seed Pikeville (Ky.) won once on the first day of the NAIA Women's Bowling National Championship at Royal Scot.
Cumberland and Pikeville meet in the Red Bracket Winner's Bracket finals at 10:30 a.m. ET on Friday.
Cumberland produced a pair of upsets today. The Phoenix beat No. 6-seed Lawrence Tech (Mich.) 2-0 in the opening round and followed with a 2-0 win over No. 3-seed Milligan (Tenn.).
Pikeville received a first-round bye and beat No. 10-seed Morningside (Iowa) 2-0 to advance.
The national tournament uses the Mega Match format in the Winner's Bracket. The Mega Match consists of a best two out of three sets.
- The first set is the total number of pins from five bowlers in a traditional game.
- The second set is the total pinfall in five Baker team games
- The third set, if necessary, is a best-of-seven Baker match.
In Cumberland's win over Lawrence Tech, the Phoenix won the first set 977-922. Cumberland closed out the win with a 1,080-920 win in the second set.
Cumberland continued its winning ways in the 2-0 win over Milligan. The Phoenix captured the first set with a 991-958 win and followed with a 1,111-973 win in the second set. Cumberland not only swept the match but did it in dramatic fashion. The Phoenix quintet bowled a 300 game in the final Baker game of the set.
Pikeville cruised to the win over Morningside, taking the first set 1,032-915. The Bears closed out the win with a 1,014-942 second-set win to remain unbeaten in the tournament.
Cumberland defeated Pikeville twice in the Mega Match format during the Mid-South Conference Tournament in early February.
