BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – No. 2-seed Cumberland (Tenn.) capped a perfect run through the Mid-South Conference Women's Bowling Tournament with a 2-0 win over top-seeded Pikeville (Ky.) to take home the championship today at Southern Lanes.

The MSC Tournament title is the first in the program's history.

The Phoenix topped Pikeville for a second time during the tournament with today's win. Cumberland beat the Bears on Friday to reach today's championship match.

In the first set of the championship Mega Match, Cumberland posted a 982-975 win in the back-and-forth battle. The set was decided on the final ball to give the Phoenix the 1-0 lead.

The Mid-South Conference implemented the Mega Match format this year to mirror the NAIA National Championships. The first set consists of the total number of pins from five bowlers in a traditional game. Set two is total pinfall in five Baker team games, and the third set, if necessary, is a best-of-seven Baker match.

In the second set, Pikeville jumped out to a 205-178 lead after the first Baker game, but the Phoenix outscored the Bears in the next four games to take the set 1,043-981 in total pinfall to claim the championship.

Cumberland did not drop a set in its championship run.

Pikeville settles for second place after winning the last three tournament titles. The Bears have played in all but one of the 14 MSC Tournament championship matches, winning a conference-best eight titles.

Earlier today, Pikeville cruised into the finals by eliminating No. 6-seed Shawnee State (Ohio) 4-0 in a best-of-seven Baker match in the consolation bracket finals.

Cumberland earns the MSC's automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament.
