BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – No. 2-seed Cumberland (Tenn.) upset top-seeded Pikeville (Ky.) in today's winner's bracket finals to reach the championship match of the Mid-South Conference Women's Bowling Tournament at Southern Lanes.
The Phoenix awaits the winner of the consolation bracket in the double-elimination tournament.
Cumberland beat No. 6-seed Shawnee State (Ohio) this morning and then knocked off Pikeville to reach the title match.
Shawnee State won twice in the consolation bracket after the Cumberland loss. The Bears beat No. 5-seed Midway (Ky.) and No. 4-seed Cumberlands (Ky.) to notch their second and third upset of the tournament. Shawnee State knocked off third-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan on the first day of the tournament.
Pikeville -- who beat Cumberlands in its first match of the day -- faces Shawnee State at 8 a.m. CT for the right to play Cumberland in the finals. The winner will have to beat Cumberland twice to claim the tournament championship.
Cumberland and the Pikeville-Shawnee State winner meet at 10 a.m. CT in a Mega Match. The if-necessary championship match would be a best-of-seven Baker match.
The Mid-South Conference implemented the Mega Match format this year to mirror the NAIA National Championships. The first set consists of the total number of pins from five bowlers in a traditional game. Set two is total pinfall in five Baker team games, and the third set, if necessary, is a best-of-seven Baker match.
The tournament champion earns the MSC's automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament.
