BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Cumberland's (Tenn.) Cannon Johnson, Cumberlands' (Ky.) Job Matossian, and Lindsey Wilson's (Ky.) Tate Rice are the Mid-South Conference Football Players of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.
Pinnacle Financial Partners sponsors the Mid-South Conference Player of the Week Award program. Pinnacle Financial Partners was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, with banks in eight states in the southeast United States.
MSC Football Defensive Player of the Week
Cannon Johnson – Cumberland (Tenn.) – Jr. – Defensive Back – Maryville, Tenn.
- Johnson was instrumental in beating Reinhardt (Ga.) -- who is receiving voting points in the national poll -- 30-18.
- He led the Phoenix with 10 tackles, including 3-1/2 tackles for a loss, and two sacks.
- Johnson added a pair of pass breakups and scooped up a fumble and scored in the fourth quarter.
- Cumberland improves to 1-1 this season with the win and 1-0 against NAIA competition.
- Johnson earns his first weekly conference honor of his career.
MSC Football Offensive Player of the Week
Tate Rice – Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) – So. – Quarterback – Manchester, Ky.
- Rice completed 17-of-20 passes for 249 yards and four touchdowns to lead Lindsey Wilson past Ave Maria (Fla.) 37-3 on Saturday night.
- He connected with four different Blue Raider receivers for each of his touchdowns -- 75, 18, 8, and 5 yards -- and ended the night by completing 10 of his last 11 passes for 107 yards.
- The touchdown passes were the first of his collegiate career.
- Lindsey Wilson improves to 2-0 this season with the win.
- Rice earns his first weekly conference honor of his career.
MSC Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Job Matossian – Cumberlands (Ky.) – Sr. – Kicker/Punter – Maryville, Tenn.
- Matossian scored 10 points in the Patriots' 66-12 win over Bluefield (Va.).
- He hit a 27-yard field goal and was a perfect 7-for-7 in extra point attempts.
- Matossian also averaged 43 yards per punt in his two tries.
- Cumberlands improves to 2-0 this season with the win.
- Matossian earns his first weekly conference honor of the season and his ninth of his career.
