BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Mid-South Conference announced its 2024 Football All-MSC teams and honors on Thursday.
Georgetown’s (Ky.) Darius Neal was named the MSC Football Craig Mullins Offensive Player of the Year Award recipient. Teammate Chad Holleran earned the Defensive Player of the Year Award for the second consecutive year. Cumberland’s (Tenn.) Jacob Cornejo was selected as Offensive Freshman of the Year. Bethel’s (Tenn.) Duston Chavis was chosen as Defensive Freshman of the Year. Finally, Cumberland (Tenn.) swept coaches' honors, as Tim Mathis was selected for the Ron Finley Award for Coach of the Year. Mathis’s assistant, Bobby Brown, earns the Assistant Coach of the Year
Neal had an impressive season, the senior running back had a total of 1161 yards on 236 rushes. Averaged 161 yards per game while averaging 6 yards per rush, totaling 8 touchdowns on the season thus far. Neal would score 2 touchdowns in three separate conference games adding a season-high rushing yards against Reinhardt (Ga.) where he had 184 rushing yards.
Holleran anchored the Tiger's defense all season from his linebacker position. The Senior totaled 48 total solo tackles and assisted on 31 tackles, totaling 79 tackles on the season. He averaged about 8 tackles per game, adding 1 interception on the season which he returned for his lone touchdown this season. Holleran had a season-high 9 tackles against Pikeville (Ky.) on 9/7/24.
Cornejo had a stand-out offensive freshman season in the running back position for the Phoenix. The freshman totaled 538 yards on 71 rushes. He had 5 touchdowns, averaging 7.6 yards per rush, all in only 8 games. His game-high rushing yards of the season came against Faulkner (Ala.) on 11/9/24 where he totaled 163 on the day.
Chavis played the whole season for the Wildcats on the defensive line as a Freshman. The Tennessee native totaled 8 solo tackles on the season while assisting on 21 tackles. Totaling 29 tackles the freshman would average 2.9 tackles a game, his best game coming against Cumberland (Tenn.) where he had 8 tackles that game. Finally, the freshman would have 3 sacks on the season to total 16 yards lost against opponents.
Mathis led the Phoenix to a 7-3 season, outperforming their previous season where they went 5-5. His overall record now sits at 30-38 after concluding his 7th season as their head coach.
Brown helped lead the Phoenix to the same 7-3 season as the offensive coordinator for Cumberland (Tenn.). This was Brown’s 12th season as an assistant and his second year as offensive coordinator. Brown’s vision earned the Phoniex a total of 2537 rushing yards and 1468 total passing yards.
Thirty players were selected to both the first and second all-conference teams.
