MOBILE, Ala. – The second-seeded Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team defeated No. 18 seed Cumberland (Tenn.) 4-0 in the Second Round of the NAIA National Tournament on Wednesday at The Mobile Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Blue Raiders improve to 17-1 and have won their last 14 matches. Lindsey Wilson will play the winner of No. 7 seed LSU Alexandria (La.) and No. 10 seed Marian (Ind.) in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 1 p.m. CT.
Heyka Rodriguez and Javiera Verdugo (No. 3-ranked doubles in NAIA) won 6-0 over Asya Tilsim Timur and Madeleine Darud in the top-seeded doubles match. Mariangeles Mateu and Blanca Trillo Pita da Veiga (No. 38) earned the doubles point for the Blue Raiders with a 6-1 victory over Elina Sungatullina and Maria Arbelaez (No. 30) at No. 3.
Verdugo (ranked No. 12) increased the Lindsey Wilson lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sungatullina at No. 4 singles. Mayra Gisone (No. 9) pushed the Blue Raider lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Valentina Mendez in the top-seeded singles match. Trillo clinched the match for the Blue Raiders with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Juanita Mendez at No. 5.
The Blue Raiders return to the court on Thursday for their quarterfinal matchup against either LSU Alexandria or Marian at 1 p.m. CT at the Mobile Tennis Center.
