BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- No. 3-seed Cumberlands (Ky.) bucked the upset trend on Saturday with a 70-66 win over sixth-seeded Cumberland (Tenn.) in the Mid-South Conference Men's Basketball Quarterfinals today at Bowling Green Arena.
The Patriots (23-6) advance to Sunday's second semifinal to play No. 7-seed Bethel (Tenn.) at 7:30 p.m. CT.
On a day where the No. 5 and No. 7 seeds pulled off upsets, Cumberlands outscored the Phoenix (11-17) 9-4 over the last 2:47 to overcome a one-point deficit and advance.
Cumberlands led by nine points at the midway point of the second half. But Cumberland fought back to take a 60-59 lead with 4:14 remaining in regulation.
Trailing 62-61 with 2:47 left, H&W-Dukes Sports Player of the Game Kyle Duke scored to inch the Patriots back in front, a lead they would not relinquish. Duke finished with a game-high 20 points in the win.
While Cumberlands struggled offensively -- making just 24 of its 70 shots -- the Patriots dominated the offensive glass, ripping down 19 offensive boards en route to scoring 22 second-chance points.
Cumberland's Triston Conger led four Phoenix players in double figures with 17 points.
