BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- No. 4-seed Cumberland (Tenn.) used a strong second half to overcome a four-point halftime deficit en route to a 79-68 win over fifth-seeded Bethel (Tenn.) today in the Mid-South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals at Studles Financial Arena.
The Phoenix (13-15) advance to play top-seeded Cumberlands (Ky.) at 5 p.m. CT on Monday, March 3, in the first of two men's semifinal games.
Bethel (16-12) led 38-34 at halftime thanks to a 16-6 run over the final six minutes to close out the first half. Cumberland turned the tables over the first nine minutes of the second frame with a 19-7 run to take a 53-45 lead.
The Phoenix extended their lead to as many as 13 points in the second half to advance. Cumberland shot 50 percent (31-of-62) from the field, largely thanks to scoring 48 points in the paint. The Phoenix limited Bethel to 34.8 percent (24-of-69) from the field, including just 11-of-33 in the second half.
Five Phoenix players scored in double figures, led by Demarius Boyd's game-high 21 points. Jalin Anglin contributed 18 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Bethel's Chauncey Hughes III and Trevor Chatman led the Wildcats with 13 points each.
