Cumberland Wins 2023-24 MSC Men's Wrestling Tournament

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Cumberland (Tenn.) captured the 2023-24 Mid-South Conference Men's Wrestling Tournament title Friday at Ephram White Gym.

The Phoenix captured their second tournament title and the first since the 2015-16 season. Cumberland topped the six-team field with 162.5 points followed by runner-up Campbellsville (Ky.) with 150 points and Cumberlands (Ky.) in third with 133 points.

Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) finished fourth with 115 points, Midway was fifth with 73.5 points and Rio Grande (Ohio) rounds out the team standings with 41 points.  

Campbellsville and Cumberland each had the most individual champions with four apiece. Izaeh Beavers (125), Nicholas Yancey (141), Antwuan Burns (157) and Gabe Craig all won championships for the Tigers.

Sammy Shires (133), Jack Latimer (149), Cole Smith (174) and Rocco Horvath (184) earned fist-place finishes for Cumberland.

Cumberlands and Lindsey Wilson  had the other two individual winners. The Patriots' Turner Black captured the title at 165 pounds while Niko Perovic won the 197 pound class for the Blue Raiders.

All 10 winners earn first-team all-conference honors, with the runner-up finishers receiving second-team honors, and third-place finishers earning third-team all-conference.

Following the tournament, Latimer was named the Men's Wrestler of the Year. Yancey was named the Deno White Wrestler of the Tournament. Burns was named the Freshman of the Year.

Cumberland's James Hicks was voted the MSC Men's Wrestling Coach of the Year by his peers while Joseph Bannister was named the Assistant Coach of the Year.
